Interview: Phil Pauley

Today I'm excited to welcome Phil Pauley to the blog! Phil is the author of his debut novel Moral Order and has been gracious enough to answer a few of my questions.

A bit about his book:

Society has been ripped apart by environmental decay and the battle scars of progress. Solar storms, extreme weather, barbaric tribes and outcasts rule the planet. In the 22nd century, no one lasts in the Wilds for long. 

Shielded from this world, teenager Luca C. Mariner lives a privileged existence in one of the last remaining Megacities. Yet his tranquil life is about to be shattered as Luca and his friends are thrown into the brutal reality of the Wilds when Earth is attacked by a merciless alien alliance. 

Luca, fragile humanoid Ceiba and feisty Asia-Mae are catapulted into a thrilling adventure of intergalactic and deep sea mystery. They must battle against time and use their strength of friendship to become leaders of a new resistance. But is it too late to restore moral order across the universe and ultimately save humanity from imminent collapse?

Interview:

When did you start writing?

I have always enjoyed writing ever since I was at school - but never found the process easy as my spelling was apparelling and so I was never encouraged by any feedback.

How did you get the idea for your book?

I was getting tens of thousands of people looking and writing about my design work so I decided a few years ago to centralise some of my ideas around my passion for underwater habitation. (Don’t ask!)

What other works do you have out?

Moral Order is my debut so I’m a little nervous about how it will be received (to say the least!)

Are you currently working on any other projects?

Aside from writing the next book, I am currently developing a website to encourage children to investigate underwater habitation as a viable curricula based learning topic - http://www.pauley.co.uk/Demos/Subsea365/index.php

What are your favorite movies, TV shows, and bands? Do they influence your work?

My very favourite film is The Big Blue but obviously all Star Wars, Star Trek, and more recent Sci-Fi future classics have played a major parental role in my upbringing. I listen to the full spectrum of music, from lots of classical right through to hard rock like Motorhead and ACDC

In three sentences or less, why should people go out and read your book?

Moral Order is a Harry Potter meets Star Trek adventure (I hope!). Aside the fictional storyline, the narrative highlights how our fragile planet may evolve over the next century. Fundamentally, it is a story about the future of humanity...
